Traditional mattresses are some springs that are covered by a soft but tough outer layer. This has been the standard for years, but there is a new mattress on the horizon. Natural latex mattresses are gaining in popularity from even those who love traditional mattresses. The numerous benefits of this material have caused its popularity to skyrocket like never before.

Natural latex material is made from the rubber tree. It has been featured many different kinds of products until natural latex was replaced with synthetic latex, which is made from petroleum. These days, natural latex is making a comeback, as the demand for sustainable and naturally produced goods is on the rise.

The energy that it takes to manufacture the products that go into a traditional mattress is well beyond the energy it takes to manufacture latex. One rubber tree can provide latex for as long as 30 years, which makes it a very sustainable material. With a cover of wool that is made from organic materials and the latex mattress is a natural fire repellant because wool won't burn very well.

Natural latex is breathable, unlike most conventional materials that are used in traditional mattresses, and will repel numerous nasty things, like mildew, mold, and dust mites. With good care natural latex can last as long as 20 years. It is also great for those with back pain because it is very supportive. Another advantage of latex mattresses is that they have a lack of toxic emissions.

Today, most traditional mattresses are produced with toxins that come from the synthetic and fire retardant materials that make up the outer covering and the inner core. For instance traditional mattresses contain antimony, polyurethane foam, and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, which is a fire retardant.

The concern is that these toxins may adversely affect the health of both children and adults. Synthetic mattresses can out gas the toxic fumes the moment that they are created. They may still be emitting gas from the materials that were meant to protect the mattress from dust mites, mildew, mold, and fire years later. Children, who are especially sensitive to toxic fumes, may have been implicated in SIDS which impairs brain function.

Therefore, if you need a new mattress, you should consider natural latex mattresses. The advantages of this sustainable, natural material include unsurpassed comfort and the health benefits of no toxic fumes or materials. Natural latex mattresses are also supportive, firm and will last a long time.
